After a man hunt and more than 20 hours on the run, David Jeffrey, 37, is now back in police custody. Authorities say he escaped from the state police headquarters in Logan yesterday. Jeffrey, who was under arrest for possession of drugs with the intent to deliver and for a parole violation out of Virginia for a sex crime, somehow managed to escape Monday evening, according to police. Jeffrey was captured Tuesday afternoon, found on the riverbank in the Justice Addition area, a few miles from police headquarters. Police say Jeffrey did not harm anyone while he was on the run. But his re-arrest doesn't mean it's case closed, police are now trying to figure out how he slipped their custody. Captain Dave Nelson says he was put in a holding room at the headquarters and had one hand handcuffed to a chain that is cemented to the floor. Nelson says the trooper left the room for a brief period to get some paperwork. While the trooper was gone, Nelson says Jeffrey somehow managed to remove the handcuff from the chain and walk out of the room and through an unlocked back door to the outside. Nelson says they will review the circumstances that lead up to the escape and correct any deficiencies that are found. Jeffrey had to be taken to the hospital after his arrest because police say he fought them and a K-9. He's now facing additional charges of battery on an officer, assault on an officer and escape. The suspect who escaped State Police custody on Monday evening has been captured. David Jeffrey was back in police custody about 2 p.m. Tuesday. Eyewitness News has a crew on the scene.
