The collapse of a section of the sixth floor at the Charleston Town Center Parking Garage occurred when a construction worker parked a heavy piece of equipment on a portion of the garage undergoing repairs, a mall official said. No one was injured and no vehicles were damaged when the slab of concrete fell onto the fifth floor about 10:15 a.m. Thursday. The mall’s general manager said workers with a Pittsburgh construction company improperly moved the equipment where the repairs were taking place, and the weakened section of the garage couldn’t support the four-ton piece of machinery. Tom Bird, general manager of the Charleston Town Center, said the mall’s parent company has spent millions of dollars over the past several years making sure the parking garage is constantly upgraded and up to code. He said inspectors found no additional problems, and the small portion of the sixth floor that failed should be repaired in a couple of weeks. Bird said while the damaged section of the garage should be fixed in a couple of weeks, the previously planned work on the sixth floor will take a couple of months to finish. He said that section of the garage, however, is expected to be open for a majority of the Christmas shopping season. A portion of the sixth floor of the Charleston Town Center Parking Garage on the Quarrier Street side has collapsed onto the fifth floor during the construction process. As a precaution, officials are going to remove the vehicles parked on the fourth floor of the level below where the collapse occurred. No injuries were reported, and no vehicles were damaged. Despite the situation, people are still proceeding to enter and exit the mall garage with their vehicles. Eyewitness News has a crew at the scene. Stay tuned for further updates.
