Two years later, and the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department is ready to start a new chapter after their main station was destroyed by a massive fire.
The new station is located at 383 Call Road between I-77 and Route 21.
"It's kind of a dream come true," explained fire chief Tim Gooch.
Gooch calls his new station a fire station of the future. It's designed in hopes to not only to serve the community, but to host events, and maybe one day house a paid fire department.
The fire department's future was uncertain at one point. Total losses from the October 2012 fire were more than $2.5 million, and only $1.6 million was covered by insurances. The Kanawha County Commission, Governor's office, state senate, and house of delegates helped out with another $350,000, and donations exceeded $250,000 from the community and fundraisers.
"I hope they're proud. I mean, I'm proud of the building. I appreciate the community coming together as they did and donating as they did," said Gooch.
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito toured the building on Monday as crews worked to put the finishing touches on the firefighter's new home.
"Sissonville is a tight-knit community, but they cover 170 square miles and that serves a lot of different areas and they're on call for a lot of other different areas too, so it's not just Sissonville," said Capito.
Despite the setbacks, the station never missed a call.
The station will be finished this weeks, and they hope to be up and running for a grand opening on November 17.
