Several organizations and hundreds of volunteers will join forces in South Charleston on Saturday to construct a new playground in a single day.
The volunteers will work with the city of South Charleston, St. John Heart and Hand Daycare, Humana and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization that has built more than 2,100 playgrounds, to construct the one-of-a-kind, multi-generational playground on Second Avenue, according to a news release from organizers of the event.
Funded primarily by Humana, a leading health and wellness company, the playground was created with personal drawings and input from local community members – from children to seniors – and will be built in six hours. It will replace the existing wooden playground at Second Avenue Park that is nearly 40 years old.
The kickoff and deployment of volunteers is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., and a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new facility is planned from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
