Dozens of people gathered at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium for a memorial service for longtime activist Larry Gibson.
Gibson, 66, died of a heart attack in September. He fought for years to protect his property from mountain top mining.
Gibson was a longtime opponent of mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia. The foundation says he spoke at schools, churches and public gatherings across the country.
Gibson founded the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation in 2004. He also was a member of the Ohio Valley Environmental Council's board.
