"Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble."

Arts Resources for the Tri-State is tackling William Shakespeare's darkest tragedy. "Macbeth" chronicles the journey of a Scottish general who would be king, and the price he pays in the quest for power.

“It's a show about a man who . . . like so many of us, thinks he has a role in life and finds out his role is different than he imagined,” Greg Morris, who plays Macbeth, said. “In fact, it's a show about a man with a big imagination. Maybe not the smartest man who ever lived, but his imagination is as big as the cosmos in which he lives.”

Because of their lofty themes and difficult language, Shakespearean works are often considered by many to present a daunting challenge, especially when put on by local theater groups.

The director said he and his cast have worked hard to create a production that today's audiences will recognize and relate.

“It's a pretty universal story,” Director Mike Murdock said. “Revenge is a story that everybody understands and a lot of our television and movies today still have the exact same themes that Shakespeare was writing about a long time ago.”

The play incorporates special effects and lighting to help convey its powerful message of using evil as a tool to gain ultimate power. Fight scenes and plenty of blood fill the stage.

"Macbeth" is not your average local community theater fare. Cast members say being a part of such a famous production is both challenging and rewarding.

“I think this is going to be one of the better theater values that this Tri-State region has seen in quite some time,” said Sarah Diamond Burroway, who plays “Witch Number One.”Shakespeare is something that not every company chooses to tackle, o hats off to ARTS for putting it up; I'm proud to be part of the project.”
