A 70-year-old woman in Fayette County shot at and scared away a burglar after the suspect broke into her home and punched her in the face.
The incident happened about 2 a.m. Thursday in the Dothan area after a woman was awakened by the sound of her burglar alarm, according to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. The woman armed herself with a .38 revolver and went to check on her house. As she approached the rear door, she was startled by a suspect who punched her in the face. She then began shooting at the suspect who fled from the residence on foot, the release said.
Due to the darkness, the victim could not provide a description of the suspect. No blood was found at the scene, indicating none of the shots apparently struck the suspect. The release said the victim suffered a minor injury to her head, but she declined medical treatment.
Deputies used a K-9 unit in an attempt to track the suspect but were unsuccessful.
The suspect gained entrance into the residence by breaking a rear window, apparently triggering the burglar alarm.
Sheriff Steve Kessler said the woman was fortunate she was able to protect herself.
“If the victim of this burglary had been unarmed, she could have been seriously injured or killed when confronted by this burglar,” Kessler said.
