Eyewitness News has learned the names of the two men killed after a violent fight late Wednesday evening in Mingo County. It happened in the Elk Creek area near the town of Delbarton along Route 65.
Alfred Russell Curry, 75, of Elk Creek died after he and Phillip Gilman, 43, of North Matewan got into a physical altercation, West Virginia State Police First Sgt. Michael Baylous said.
Curry received severe head injuries during that altercation, but was able to make his way to a nearby road where County Commissioner David Baisden reportedly stopped in a truck to assist him. That's when Gilman got inside the Ford F-250 owned by Baisden and ran over Curry, who died as a result, Baylous said. Baisden is Curry's half-brother.
A state trooper with the Mingo County detachment, Mingo County Deputies E. Sherrill and M. A. Lendearode and a Delbarton police officer attempted to subdue Gilman, Baylous said, but the suspect charged at them swinging a hammer. Gillman was shot and killed.
The bodies of Curry and Gilman have been sent to the state medical examiner's officer for autopsy.
Officers with the Williamson, Gilbert and Logan detachments all responded to the scene. Troopers said a Delbarton city officer killed Gilman with a shotgun.
