Friends, family, and victims of bullying gathered at the capital Monday evening. The candlelight vigil kicks off the 5th annual West Virginia Bullying Awareness Week. "This is a time where we recognize the people who have lost some, but also a time to show we do support them, and we, that we're there for them, and that you're not alone that there is people out here to help," says Bully Free West Virginia Program Coordinator, Tonya Barnett-Huff. Bullying is a nationwide problem, but Secretary of State, Natalie Tennant, says West Virginia has taken the right steps to eliminate bullying. "Even if it's one child, that's one child too much. So we need to make sure there's an attitude, there's an environment, there's a culture, that it's not acceptable," says Tennant. That environment for victims is something Barnett-Huff hopes people get out of events like this candlelight vigil. It's an uphill battle but she intends to continue the fight against bullying. "I don't think there will ever be an end to it. I think we're always going to have some form of bullying. But it's how we're going to approach it and how we're going to deal with it. And I think once there's consequences for it and people know that we're watching, that we are out here, you're going to see it go down in numbers and see more support for kids," says Barnett-Huff. Each day this week has a different theme in order to promote bullying education. Tuesday is all about getting educated about bullying. Acting out is the theme on Wednesday encouraging people to celebrate differences. Thursday everyone is encouraged to "Speak Up" and speak out against bullying. And finally on Friday people are to "Be Creative” in telling their stories about bullying. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
