The Special Metals plant in Huntington laid off 74 hourly employees, a spokesman from Special Metal’s parent company said.
In addition, seven employees were laid off from the Special Metals plant in Burnaugh, Ky., the spokesman from Precision Castparts Corp. said.
"The layoffs were due to adverse general industrial market conditions,” the spokesman said. “These folks were primarily in production and maintenance. We will recall them as business improves.”
The spokesman said after the layoffs, 542 hourly employees will be left at Huntington and 125 at Burnaugh.
A source from the Special Metals plant said 11 of the employees in the Huntington plant were hired just last week.
In August, workers at Special Metals in Huntington voted in favor of a new contract. The measure passed with a total of 337 in favor to 144 against the proposed contract. This new contract starts immediately and will expire on Aug. 7, 2015.
