A West Virginia firefighter was remembered Sunday at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. Joey King was a member of the Davis Creek-Ruthdale Volunteer Fire Department. He died when he fell from a bridge while investigating an arson in Kanawha County in December. Charles Roberts, 38, pleaded guilty to arson and involuntary manslaughter for that fire. He was sentenced to six years in prison in August. King and 79 other fallen firefighters from around the country who died in 2011 were honored during the three-day event at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md. All state and U.S. flags were flown at half-staff Sunday in honor of the fallen firefighters’ memorial service. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered all state and U.S. flags to fly Sunday at half-staff in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. "I encourage all West Virginians to take precautions, check the functionality of household smoke detectors, as well as develop and practice a family fire escape plan that includes at least two ways out of every room," Tomblin said. "Our courageous firefighters risk their lives each and every day, and it is important we honor their selfless efforts and pay our respects to those who gave their lives to protect others." The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service is held each year during Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 7 through Oct. 13. The week is meant to honor the lives of fallen firefighters and encourage all Americans to take meaningful steps to reduce the risk of fire in our homes. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
