Here are the traffic pattern changes associated with the Rod Run Doo Wop and World's Championship Chili Cookoff events going on over the next several days in Charleston. Wednesday – Kanawha Boulevard closes at 6 p.m. Kanawha Boulevard will be closed from Brooks Street on the East End through Ohio Avenue on the West Side. One westbound lane of the boulevard will remain open from Clendenin Street to the turn onto Pennsylvania Avenue northbound. One westbound lane will remain open from Brooks to Capitol streets. Most side streets that access the boulevard will be restricted to local traffic only. Pennsylvania Avenue southbound lanes will be closed at Monongalia Street with traffic detoured to the west. Thursday – Charleston Rod Run & Doo Wop begins (through Sunday afternoon) The unit block of Leon Sullivan Way will become a two-way street to provide drop-off and pickup access to the schools nearby. Other drivers are encouraged to avoid this area along Virginia Street during peak drop-off and pickup times. Vehicles registering for the Charleston Boulevard Ron Run & Doo Wop will access the car show via a registration area on a westbound lane of Kanawha Boulevard. Cars will be arriving in that area starting Thursday morning and continuing through Saturday. Friday – World's Championship Chili Cookoff begins on Magic Island (through Sunday evening) Cooks for the World's Championship Chili Cookoff will begin arriving at Magic Island starting at 7 a.m. via Ohio Avenue, so traffic in that area promises to be heavy during the morning commute. While the eastbound detour begins at Ohio Avenue, drivers heading into downtown may want to explore an alternate route in from the west. Saturday – Doo Wop fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. 10 a.m. – The right southbound lane of the South Side Bridge and the pedestrian sidewalk will be closed as preparations begin for the fireworks show. 5 p.m. – The South Side Bridge will be closed. 6 p.m. – MacCorkle Avenue will be closed between Porter Road and U.S. 119. People will be allowed to drive eastbound from U.S. 119 on Thayer and Ferry Street to access Louden Heights Road or Bridge Road until 9 p.m. 9 p.m. – Louden Heights Road will be closed from the South Side Bridge to Grosscup Road because it is within the fireworks show safety zone. Eastbound access from U.S. 119 will be restricted. The fireworks-related road closures will remain in effect until safety checks and cleanup are complete following the fireworks show. Sunday – Kanawha Boulevard re-opens after events close Following completion of the Rod Run & Doo Wop Car Show awards ceremony and post-event cleanup, Kanawha Boulevard will re-open between Pennsylvania Avenue and Brooks Street. This will happen probably sometime mid-afternoon or later. After the World's Championship Chili Cookoff awards its grand prize early Sunday evening and post-even cleanup is complete, the boulevard will reopen between the Ohio and Pennsylvania avenues. This will probably take place late Sunday evening. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
