For more than 25 years, Rodney Lewis has started out a countless number of days exercising and relaxing at Ritter Park. "A lot of people drink coffee. I come to the park. I don't even drink coffee. That's my fix," Lewis said. Though some things have changed, his love for the park has remained a constant. "I like the trees. I like the people I meet over here. I have a lot of friends over here in all that time, and I just enjoy coming over." Lewis is not the only one showing love for the park in the heart of Huntington. Ritter Park has been named one of 10 "Great Public Spaces for 2012" by the American Planning Association. It's in the company of parks in Chicago, Portland and Denver. Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District Executive Director Kevin Brady said one of the things about Ritter Park and parks in general is “it's about quality of life. I think that's one of the big things that the people in this area deserve." The American Planning Association said the park was picked for the location, design, historical value and the recreation and cultural activities available. Brady said he loves seeing folks using everything the park has to offer. "Any time day or evening you can see people walking, running, on the playground, at the dog park and at the rose garden,” Brady said. “That's why we do what we do. We're very proud." Ritter Park in Huntington was name as one of 10 Great Public Spaces for 2012 by the American Planning Association. The selections by the association were part of the organization's Great Places in America Program that applauds the efforts made by those who work and plan to add value to their communities. Ritter Park was chosen by the association because of its location, design, recreational and cultural amenities and the historic value of the area around it, according to a news release from the association. The location that Ritter Park resides was once a proposed site for an incinerator. The park features a rose garden, a children's playground, a dog park and an outdoor railroad museum.
