On World Habitat For Humanity Day, the Huntington Area Habitat For Humanity expanded its program. The organization bought its first lot to build its first house in Proctorville, Ohio.
"There's a huge need for affordable housing in the Lawrence County area,” David Michael with Habitat said. “Our service area here in Lawrence will include all of the county with the exception of Ironton, Hanging Rock and Coal Grove."
Not only is the Huntington Area Habitat for Humanity crossing over into Ohio, it is also growing in Cabell County. Lots left vacant after the Huntington demolition project in the Fairfield West community area will be filled with some Habitat homes.
Jennifer Hatten with Habitat said it not only improves the area “it helps families move into these areas. It helps with the tax base, so it's increasing revenue for new structures. You've gone from a dilapidated home to a new construction that will improve aesthetics of the neighborhood."
Anyone interested in applying for residency at the new home that will soon be built in Proctorville can meet at the Ohio University Proctorville Center in Proctorville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
