A man was arrested in Huntington after West Virginia State Police said he shot his mother's dog while she slept in the same room.
Troopers arrested Justin A. Pettaway, 25, of Huntington Friday. Troopers responded to a house at 1342 10th Ave. in Huntington after a woman called and said her son shot her bulldog, according to court documents.
The woman said that she was asleep in the room when her son allegedly shot the dog in the neck. While officers examined the dog’s injuries, they noticed the suspect trying to escape the police vehicle, the documents said. After a brief struggle, they were able to restrain him. Court documents said the suspect showed officers where the gun was located. In a statement, the suspect said he knew he couldn't have a gun because of a previous conviction.
Pettaway admitted to shooting the dog in his mother's bedroom while she slept because she would not give him a calling card to call his wife in South Africa, the documents said.
Troopers charged Pettaway with wanton endangerment, cruelty to animals, escape, brandishing, possessing a firearm, domestic assault and obstruction. He is being held at the Western Regional Jail on a $99,000 bond.
