Parkersburg police arrested a man for allegedly attempting to break into a car after officers said they found him hiding in an abandoned apartment building.
Jason Lee Caplinger, 28, of Parkersburg was charged with felony attempted grand larceny after he was arrested about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Parkersburg Police Department.
Officers responded to a call in the 110 block of Mary Street to check out a report about possible vehicle tampering. Police talked to witnesses about a suspicious individual inside a parked vehicle, and officers received a description of the suspect and searched the area.
An officer heard noise coming from an abandoned apartment building in the 600 block of East Street and began a search of the building. Police said they found Caplinger, who matched the description of the suspect, hiding in the upstairs portion of the structure.
Officers then checked the vehicle that had been tampered with and discovered that a screwdriver had been beaten into the ignition switch.
