Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in the Mountain State. Studies show kids as young as 11 years old are using these drugs to get high. Sometimes they get those drugs from their own homes. State officials traveled to Jackson County Tuesday to explain the dangers associated with these drugs. "Prescription drugs can be every bit as dangerous as street drugs," U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said. Goodwin and Officer Chad Napier with the Charleston Metro Drug Unit spoke with middle school and high school students across Jackson County. They showed pictures of drug abusers before and after they started using drugs to show the physical differences these drugs can cause. "Our hope is to get these kids early enough that they recognize the very real dangers that prescription drugs present," Goodwin said. "We lead the nation in drug overdose deaths, and nine out of 10 of those drug overdose deaths are associated with prescription drugs." Ripley Middle School student Chance Morgan, an eighth-grader, said there are not many obstacles to obtaining access to prescription drugs. “You can just go and grab them out of your cabinet," Morgan said. "It's just an easy way to get high." Meanwhile, Ripley Middle School eighth-grader Izzy Donahew said there are a lot of temptations out there. "It's very important because a lot of kids they think it's cool, and it's easy to grab those out of the cabinet. So I think it's important that we're informed to say no and the dangers of these drug uses." Dangers that Goodwin said they hope to stop, before they even start. If you have unused prescription drugs in your home, there will be statewide drug take-backs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To find out if one is near you, go to www.dea.gov for more information.
