The condition of a firefighter who was injured while responding to a fire has improved.
David Massey, 54 of Whitesville has been upgraded to stable condition, Whitesville Fire Chief David Hodges said Tuesday afternoon. He was responding to a fire on Woodrow Hendricks Drive Tuesday morning when the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department’s water tanker truck he was driving rolled over.
Massey is a 35-year veteran of the department.
A Whitesville firefighter remains in the hospital with critical injuries after a tanker the firefighter was driving overturned Tuesday morning.
The firefighter was responding to a report of a house fire along Woodrow Hendricks Drive, according to a news release from Chief David Hodges with the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department.
The name of the injured firefighter has not been released, but the firefighter was flown to Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston with serious injuries.
"This is a very serious situation, and I would ask that everyone keep this firefighter in their thoughts and prayers," Hodges said.
There is no word on what caused the 2,200-gallon tanker to roll. The Boone County Sheriff's Office and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the incident.
A firefighter was injured early Tuesday morning after the tanker the firefighter was driving to a house fire overturned.
Dispatchers said it happened on Route 3 in Sylvester near Elk Run Coal. That portion of roadway remained closed until about 11 a.m. while crews cleared the scene. The house fire was reportedly in Orgas.
The injured firefighter was flown to a Charleston hospital. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more on this developing story.
