The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department has confirmed that an inmate in the Boyd County Detention Center tested positive for tuberculosis.
The inmate was put into isolation and is being treated for tuberculosis, according to a news release from the health department.
During the investigation by the health department, it was discovered that staff at the jail, law enforcement officials and inmates could have been exposed to the inmate. Anyone who may have been exposed is being tested for the illness and will be treated if a test turns out positive.
The incarcerated population contains a greater risk for contracting tuberculosis that the overall population because of the close living quarters and high rate of other chronic illnesses, the Centers for Disease Control said. The health department said there is no risk to the general public from this case.
