A major ATV and motorcycle theft ring is busted wide open, sending nine people to jail, and more could be joining them. The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office says it's been conducting an intense investigation into the thefts that were occuring in and around the Sissonville and Elk areas of the county. They say the theives were looking for quick cash used to buy drugs, particularly meth. "I hope they get every one of them," says Jerry Rose. For him, news that the alleged theives who took off with his ATV have been caught comes as a relief. "It makes me feel good to know that they've caught them," he says, He kept his ATV locked away in an out building, but around 3 o'clock one morning, his wife woke to find the lock cut, and the ATV gone. Rose is just one of the many victims allegedly targeted by a group of nine and counting. Roger Lee Burdette, 24, of Sissonville, Tiffany Dawn Shaffer, 23, of Sissonville, Kevin Allen Hudson, 28, of Sissonville, Steven R. Burdette, 37, of Charleston, Brandi Rose, 27, of Charleston, Joshua Snyder, 22, of Charleston, Paula Brown, 27, of Charleston, Helen Skeens, 53, of Charleston, and Wayne Thaxton, 59, of Charleston were all arrested Tuesday for various crimes uncovered during the investigation. "It's been all the same people, they just run around stealing from everywhere," explains Deputy C.D. Lyons. Many of the arrests also yielded drug charges including Roger Burdette and Tiffany Shaffer. They're accused of operating a meth lab out of a home in Sissonville. But the bottom line, police say, is that the group worked together to steal ATV's, dirt bikes, min scooters, and anything valuable they could get their hands on. In many cases, they would bust out the keyholes to the ATVs and hotwire them. "I appreciate the effort the police put into it," says Rose. More charges are pending as this investigation continues.
