The city of Charleston's Veterans Day parade and celebration will take place Nov. 10 through downtown Charleston and culminate with a ceremony on the Schoenbaum Stage at Haddad Riverfront Park.
Charleston's parade has been designated by the Veterans Day National Committee as one of 62 regional sites for major celebrations this year. Because the traditional Veterans Day on Nov. 11 is a Sunday this year, local and state officials and the parade organizer, Ed Converse of the American Legion, have agreed to hold Charleston's celebration during the morning of Saturday, Nov. 10 so more citizens can participate and demonstrate their support for veterans.
In addition to the primary sponsorship by the John Brawley Post 20 of the American Legion and the city of Charleston, leaders from the West Virginia National Guard, West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's Office also are working on the event planning effort.
