A man became unresponsive and died Thursday in Doddridge County while State Police were searching his residence for a fugitive, State Police said.
Elton Wine, 71, of West Union died during the search of his property, according to a State Police news release. State Police went to the residence to serve a search warrant for a fugitive, John Bowman, who has active warrants for manufacturing with the intent to deliver marijuana.
State Police said the West Virginia State Police Special Response Team was used to serve the warrant based on the extensive and violent criminal histories of Bowman and Wine. When State Police encountered Wine, he was uncooperative and attempted to interfere with the search. Wine began having difficulty breathing, and police started providing first aid.
Paramedics were called, but Wine became unresponsive and passed away. His body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
