Hundreds of people are gathering in the capital city with the hope of putting an end to child abuse and neglect.

The 2012 Leadership Institute on Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect is taking place at the Charleston Civic Center. The event runs throughout the week.

The conference brings together state and local leaders who want to stop the mistreatment of children and put in place various programs to help make that happen.

Organizers say in-home family education programs have expanded, which have helped address the issues. They say much more still needs to be done, however.
