Athens County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who they said stole an ATV and wrecked it after police blocked the roadway.
Tony Hedges, 31, of Coolville was arrested Tuesday and charged with driving under suspension, failure to control, failure to comply, two counts of breaking and entering and receiving stolen property, Sheriff Patrick Kelly said in a news release.
The release said an 84 year-old woman saw a man stealing items from her barn in Coolville. The woman said the suspect came in to her house unannounced and asked to use the phone. She then called her son and his wife to come to her house. When they arrived, they said the suspect got on the four-wheeler and tried to start it. The daughter-in-law claimed that she felt as though the suspect would try and run them over, and shot out the front tire of the ATV with a gun.
The release said the suspect fled on the vehicle when a sheriff’s deputy spotted him. The deputy blocked the road with his car when the suspect allegedly tried to pass it. That’s when police said the ATV flipped into a ditch.
Hedges was taken to a Columbus hospital and is listed in stable condition.
