Run, Row, Ride.. It's as simple as that if you want to compete in the third annual Capital City Challenge. "If I can do it, anybody can do it!" said Marketing Director and race participant Amy Smith. This triathlon in a little different from the typical triathlon. Instead of swimming, you row. "The first time I was in a kayak was last year the day before the race," said Smith. This will be Amy Smith's second time participating in the race. You can compete as a team of two or three people, or tackle the course alone. The course includes a 4.2 mile run, 4.2 mile kayak, and a 16.8 mile bike ride. Smith has recruited more athletes this year, including myself. Her husband is participating alone, and her 12-year-old son is joing a team. "It's a very family friendly event and it really showcases our beuatiful river state," said Smith. In addition to showcasing the Capital City, she also hopes this type of event helps dispell the stereotype that West Virginians are unhealthy and inactive. "I think we're getting better and that's part of the reason why we're doing this," said Smith, "to show our kids and get them involved in a race like this to get them out and get them healthy and it's fun too!" Family Counseling Connection will take home 100% of the proceeds from the race. FCC is a local non-profit organization providing counseling and other services to rape and sexual assault victims. "We basically let the person know and their family that things will be okay, we're there more or less to process what will happen next," said FCC Executive Director Frank Fazzolari. Come join me September 15th, at 9:30 on Magic Island. Together one step, paddle, and peddle at a time we will help the community.
