The 20th annual Mule and Donkey show gets under way this weekend in Holly Gray Park in Sutton.
It's the big event of the year for Eyewitness News’ grizzled muleskinner Bob Aaron and about 150 owners of the long-eared creatures. Some people have already set up camp at the park.
Aaron said mules have a stubborn reputation, but it's mostly self-preservation. They can have a bit of attitude.
His wife, Kim, decided a little professional help with two green broke jackasses might be good this year and brought in horse whisper Dave Ross. Ross is set to judge the 20th annual Mule and Donkey show near Flatwoods.
The two-day, 53-class show will get more than 150 donkeys and mules Saturday and Sunday from half-a-dozen states. Competition can be world class like Deby Calhoun's donkey from Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Aarons can't show their mule, Ellie Earheart, this year because she was trained by the show judge.
Events include the Coon Jump, where some mules can clear a 72-inch tall obstacle without a running start, barrel racing, the Wild Mule Race and just about anything you would see at a horse show.
The show starts at 4 p.m. Saturday and resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday. You can contact Karen Carr at (304) 410-1545 or by email at email@example.com.
