Ground was broken Tuesday for a new $2.3 million animal shelter in Putnam County.
The new shelter, which will be located in Eleanor along Route 62, has been a long anticipated project; volunteers have been raising money for years.
In February, the commissioners approved the plan in a 2-1 vote. Commissioner Stephen Andes voted against the plan. Commissioners Gary Tillis and R. Joseph Haynes voted for it. Haynes' wife has been instrumental in getting the new shelter built.
