The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department is urging residents to use caution after an incident in which a man visited a home and falsely claimed to be an inspector for the Lawrence County Health Department.
The man came to a home on Township Road in Proctorville about 11 a.m. Thursday and told the resident he was a health department inspector and that he had been ordered to inspect the residence, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department. He showed a badge and was allowed into the home, but the resident became suspicious about the suspect’s demeanor and began to question him.
After the suspect left, the homeowner called the health department and was advised that the department did not have any inspectors in the field and had no one who matched the man’s description. Deputies searched the area and could not find the suspect.
The suspect is described as a white male, about 6 feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a white dress shirt and blue jacket and was driving a maroon car, possible a Dodge Dart.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 740-533-4373.
