It's billed as a story of trust and friendship. Author E.B. White's magical tale “Charlotte’s Web” -- the story of a small pig who makes a very special eight-legged friend -- is coming to the stage at the Alban Arts Center in St. Albans. Wilbur is the runt of the litter and is destined for slaughter. But the pleas of a young girl win him a stay of execution. “She laughs a lot and she smiles a lot,” Emma Leary, who plays the role of Fern, said. “Whenever she hears that Wilbur is going to die, she's like all freaked out because she doesn't want someone to get killed just because they're small.” However, Wilbur's future is still unsure until he meets a spider named Charlotte. She starts writing mysterious messages in her web designed to save him. Megan Ebbeskotte, who plays the role of Charlotte, said, “She forms a really beautiful friendship with Wilbur, and she tries everything she can to save him when they find out.” Charlotte and Wilbur are joined by a barnyard of characters, including the shifty rat Templeton who is always looking for his next meal. The play is presented by a mix of actors young and old. As the story unfolds, it shows the importance of not judging by appearance – that even something very small can make a very big impact. And that differences don't have to separate us. Sometimes the best of friends are nothing alike at all. "I think people should come and see the show because it's going to be really fun and entertaining,” Ebbeskotte said. “It teaches kids a really good lesson – to be there for your friends and to always stick up for each other.” Performances of "Charlotte's Web" are scheduled 8 p.m. Aug. 24, 25, 31 and Sept. 1; and 2 p.m. Aug. 26 and Sept. 2. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and kids 12 and under. The Alban Theater is located at 65 Olde Main, St. Albans.
