Putnam County students began a brand new school year Thursday. For high school students at Buffalo, it was a fresh start in a fresh, new school. "It's just hard to believe we're actually in this school now," junior Chloe Stephens said. It's been a long time coming for Buffalo High School students. Thursday was the first day in their new building. It replaces the old school that was more than 50 years old. A big change-up compared to the school they are used to. "When I first came here to move boxes, they told me to take them down to the science room and I ended up at the office. I was like, ‘This isn't right,’ "student Isaiah Robinson said. The school has several new upgrades including a new auditorium, a bigger gym and larger classrooms. But what may be the biggest change is the way the kids are taught through something called, Project Based Learning. Students will only have textbooks as a reference, and they will rely on computers for their assignments and most of their work will be done in groups vs. individually. Teachers say it's meant to better prepare them for college and beyond. "In reality, being part of a team is extremely important. Once you leave high school, you're not sitting at a desk with a teacher in front," Language arts teacher Linda Hoffman said. All of the upgrades and new structure of learning are welcomed enthusiastically because the single A school was not even expected to ever be a reality. "Normally, you don't build a single A school. Normally, the state will consolidate schools to build new schools,” Buffalo High School Principal Richard Grim said. “We're tickled to death that they did." MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
