Students in Putnam County are just days away from heading back to school. But students at Buffalo High School are just days away from a moment that's been decades in the making.
Buffalo High School students will be heading back to school in a brand new building. It's replacing the old high school which is more than 50 years old.
"I think with the town of Buffalo, it's just going to be an enormous benefit," said BHS teacher, Chuck Elkins.
And it's something many thought would never happen. Over the years, there were several plans to shut Buffalo High School down and consolidate with Poca High School.
But voters recently passed a school bond providing funding to update several schools in the county and build a new high school in Buffalo. Something that's unprecedented in this day and age because Buffalo is a small, single A school.
"The people of Eleanor and Buffalo and Red House got together and passed it overwhelmingly. And now we're here," said Elkins.
And now the tight knit community of students and teachers can stay together. But with the added bonus of some major upgrades like a new gym, large classrooms, a library and even new technology for the students to enhance their learning.
"They'll be more engaged. They'll know why they're learning because it's all project based. So kids will be more involved. They'll be excited instead of I have to go to school today," said BHS Principal, Richard Grim.
"You know, for the first time in a long time we have kids who can't wait to be here," said Elkins.
