In early July, a Lincoln County family faced what could be their worst fear after finding out their loved one was murdered. On Saturday, a community united to lend a helping hand during their time of tragedy. It comes nearly one month after 29-year old Daniel Cook was shot and killed. His body was found in a secluded part of Lincoln County. State Police say the crime happened at the hands of Greg Aaron Justice, a long time friend of Cook. But something caused that friendship to come to a deadly end. Police say Justice shot Cook and left him near Laurel Fork Road. "This guy knew him, He befriended him. And to take him out and do this, I just can't comprehend it," said family friend, Lois Kent. On Saturday, something good seemed to come from something so tragic. The people who knew Cook the best are raising money for his family for funeral expenses through a hot dog sale, a raffle, and music. Because to the people in the community, there is nothing better than sticking together. "My community is always helping each other with whatever is needed," said family friend, Lee Ann Brown. Hundreds of people gathered at the McCorkle Community Center to donate, lend a helping hand, or best of all...to show their support. "I'm really glad that people are having a good time. We wanted people to be happy and not just sad," said Cook's sister, Kristie Flowers. A community and a family brushed with tragedy, yet looking for a brighter day ahead. Confident they can lean on one another to make it through. "I had no idea that he had touched this many peoples' lives," said Flowers. The event will continue on Sunday with a Poker Run. Registration starts at 12:30 p.m. at Blizzard's Custom Cycles in Davis Creek. It will start at 2:00 p.m. and end at the McCorkle Community Center in Lincoln County. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
