It's a project that cost taxpayers nearly $300,000 and has some asking if the payoff is worth it. We take a look at the numbers in our Waste Watch Segment.
The Department of Environmental Protection received federal stimulus money to install solar energy panels on the roof of its Kanawha City building.
Solar energy will eventually provide about 14% of the building's electricity and will heat the facility's water.
Right now, it is estimated the utility savings will be about $4,000 a year. At that rate, it wold take more than 70 years for the panels to pay for themselves.
Greg Adolfson with the WV DEP says the payout could be much sooner and the project is also an important way for the DEP to show it's support of a greener environment.
