A local animal shelter has been overwhelmed by cats. The Roane County Animal Shelter is Spencer is now housing 125 cats, all from the same owner.
"They are all very well taken care of, they're all litter box trained it was just somebody who had their heart in the right place and it just got out of control so they reached out for help," shelter worker and Humane Society member Susan Lyons says.
The shelter stepped in and rescued the cats, most of them adults, but the cats have now over whelmed the shelter. It is equipped to handle 30 cats, Lyons says 40 at the most, so they are three to four times over the limit.
Lyons says the community has already started stepping up to help, she says the response has been "overwhelming." Carolyn Wilson, of Spencer, took it upon herself to go around the area and collect money. She was able to raise $200 in one day, which she used to buy numerous bags of food.
"I just wanted to help the best I could," Wilson says.
Now the shelter is working to assess the cats and determine which ones are able to be adoptable. Lyons says the cats are friendly but scared and some have health issues.
If you would like to help the shelter or are interested in adopting a cat, you can find more information on their Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/roane.shelter.
And the shelter also wants to remind people to spay and neuter your pets, they say one cat, in just six-years, can be produce 640,000 others.
