A Clarksburg teenager hit by lightning continues his remarkable recovery in a Pittsburgh burn unit. Doctors have reduced 18-year-old Zach Sandy's medication as they monitor his progress. The Clarksburg teen was struck by lightning Tuesday afternoon during a softball game at a church camp in Parkersburg. Zach was unresponsive and not breathing immediately after the strike. Zach's father, Russell Sandy, says his son can open his eyes, speak, and walk with assistance. Russell says going from no pulse Wednesday afternoon to walking and talking Thursday evening is a miracle. Doctors say if Zach's progress continues, he will be home as early as next Monday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A teenage boy is fighting for his life tonight. Eighteen-year-old Zach Sandy was struck by lightning while playing softball at a church camp in Parkersburg Wednesday afternoon. A bolt of lightning struck the back of his head and traveled down his body and out his feet. Witnesses say it was not even raining at the time, just a lot of clouds in the sky. Zach's shirt and shoes were singed and his cell phone, which was in his back pocket, melted. Eyewitness news spoke with Zach's father, Russell Sandy. He said his son is still on life support and the machine is breathing for him. He also said Zach is able to move his extremities. The doctors were concerned about internal burns in Zach's muscles and ligaments, but so far the tests that have been performed show positive results of recovery. Russell also told Eyewitness News that Zach was able to give nurses a thumbs up on command. Zach remains on life support, but his father says he is improving. Russell also says his son has received a lot of messages of support and prayers from all over the country. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
