After being without power since Friday, Sofija Smith is more than thankful for her neighbors in the Arlington Park area of Huntington. Many of them have power, and are doing what they can to help relieve some inconveniences for those without. She says, "They came and cleared debris, they brought coffee, and offer to let me take a shower. They offer to share their electric. What more can you ask?"
Many neighbors have hooked up extension cords to run to other houses, just to keep the fridge going. Smith says, "We'd do the same for each other. I think it's great. On this hill, everybody helps everybody."
Vickie Smith, who didn't want to go on camera after the extended outage, says having a little peace of mind let her pay it forward. "That put me in a position where I was able to go and help other neighbors, because we have other neighbors in this area who don't have power." She says she and others took food to even more neighbors and friends who were dealing without power and helped check up on them.
Luckily the five day wait is over for Sofija and Vickie. As Eyewitness News was chatting with the ladies, we caught the trucks rolling in to the rescue, and the power was restored by early this afternoon. Vickie says, "Just to go into your house and flick the switch and know that the light is going to come on! Or to flick the switch and know that you're going to have air conditioning is just truly wonderful."
Now they're thankful for not only for helpful neighbors, but also the patient power crews and finally, their own power supply!
