Running a 5k is no easy feat.. but running a 5k in near 100-degree heat.. well that's not easy either. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried," said Joyce Ridenour. Joyce Ridenour is one of more than 80 runners who have completed a 10-week 5k program. The Genesis 5k training plan allows runners of all skill levels to work toward the ultimate goal of completing a 5k. "The whole point of it is getting people out of their house, getting them involved, getting them walking and running and feeling good about what they're doing," said Director of Hospice and runner Jim Wilkerson. When the runners signed up for the program in April, they had no idea the Celebrate Independence 5k would be on the hottest day of the year. "10 weeks ago I couldn't run 60 seconds," said Kelly Anderson. Kelly Anderson is excited but also nervous about running her first 5k in the scorching heat Friday night. "[I'm] just trying to do what we've learned to do and try to psych your mind out," said Anderson. "The heat does concern me because I don't know that I've run in this heat with the humidity. I'm just hoping this breeze continues to blow tonight," said Elizabeth Maxwell. For these runners, it's not just about completing a goal. They're also supporting a good cause. The race benefits the Childhood Language Center. The CLC benefits kids with speech and language disorders. The center treats around 90 kids a year at no cost regardless of ability to pay. The runners and walkers will have access to water stations along the course and medical personnel will be standing by just in case. "Bring down your squirt guns, bottles, misting fans and stand along the sidewalk and spray us as we go by!" said Duane West.
