The Associated Press reports Alpha Natural Resources is closing two mines and a coal preparation plant, and scaling back other operations in southern West Virginia
Spokesman Ted Pile says that altogether, 100 people will be laid off. Eighty will transfer to other Alpha operations.
Dale Hamilton was a contract worker at a coal preparation plant which was shut down in Omar.
"It's devestating," Hamilton said. "I have to worry about how am I going to pay my bills, feed my kids?"
The changes are effective immediately. Workers were informed at morning and afternoon meetings Wednesday.
