Police have made an arrest in an armed bank robbery that happened last week. Charleston officers say they are very pleased to have 31-year-old Joseph Pike Dempsey in custody. Investigators say it was with the help of the South Charleston Police Department that he is under arrest. Dempsey was brought into magistrate court Tuesday morning to face initial charges. He allegedly walked into the Fifth Third Bank on Mackorkle Avenue last Thursday with a gun. Police say Dempsey then ordered three tellers to the floor. Once they were down, he grabbed a handful of money and took off. However, police say that's when he made a mistake. Dempsey allegedly dropped a magazine from the pistol he was carrying, he stopped, turned around toward the bank and that's when an employee got a good look at his face. The next day, Friday, South Charleston officers arrested Dempsey after he allegedly got into an altercation with his neighbors, punching them in the face and pulling a gun. When police arrived, Dempsey allegedly resisted arrest. He had to be pepper sprayed and tasered. A South Charleston officer noticed Dempsey resembled the sketch of the bank robber. They showed a bank employee a photo lineup and he identified Dempsey as the man who hit the Fifth Third bank. Kanawha County Magistrate Julie Yeager placed Dempsey on a $150,000 cash bond. He has a preliminary hearing on the bank robbery charge set for June 21st. He's facing up to 25 years in prison. But he'll be in court three days before that to answer charges for the South Charleston incident. ---------------- Charleston police have made an arrest in the robbery of the Fifth Third Bank in Kanawha City that happened on Thursday.
