Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of boating season.
That means Natural Resource Police Officers are out in force patrolling the waterways.
Here are a few tips to keep you and your passengers safe.
Get your boat check for safety problems before you hit the water.
Take a boating class to learn the rules of the water.
The United States Coast Guard says operator errors account for 70% of boating accidents.
If you are operating the boat, do not drink alcohol.
Make sure everyone on board wears a life jacket.
WV Natural Resource Police Officer Brett Chandler says, you also need an observer if your going to pull anything from your vessel such as a water-skier.
Officers also say Memorial Day is a busy weekend and spend most of their times reminding people of the basic rules.
