Bill Stewart's ties to Huntington run deep. He worked as a coach for the Thundering Herd back in 1980 and left his mark.
Monday afternoon, Stewart's death dominated the sports talk airwaves in Huntington. Paul Swann with Sports Talk 800 WVHU fielded calls from both WVU and Marshall Fans. "You didn't have to be a WVU or a Marshall fan to love him. He left an impact on the state," said Swann.
Woody Woodrum with "Herd Insider" said, "He was such a good coach, such a quality person. Sonny Randall said we'll teach him to coach, but we hired him because he's quality person."
Marshall's Athletic Director Mike Hamrick knew Stewart for thirty year and said, "I was in shock. I was saddened to hear about it. The state of West Virginia lost a great person. He was a great friend. I coached with him and had been friends with him for thirty years. It's a sad loss for the state because he loved West Virginia."
