A local dog is vying for some major "wagging" rights!
Angel, a Sheltie, is a therapy dog who volunteers at the Cabell County Public Library downtown, listening to kids read. Children who may have a difficult time trying to read spend about 20 minutes a session with the dog next to them.
Angel was recently nominated for a 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Award by the family of one of those children, Sage. Sage has selective mutism, which is a social communication anxiety disorder. After not speaking to anyone but his family for two years, Sage immediately took to Angel and started reading aloud to her. Angel's owners Dick and Robin Ash bring her to the library each week. Dick says, "The children come and read to the therapy dog in a non-judgmental setting and it gives them a chance to practice their reading aloud."
Sage slowly began talking to others and has blossomed from there.
