The New River Gorge National River family and park staff are mourning the loss of National Park Service Ranger David Caldwell.
Caldwell collapsed and died while preparing to present a school program at the Grandview Area of the New River Gorge National River.
At the time of his collapse, CPR was administered, he was shocked by an Automatic External Defibrillator, and two nurses who were visiting, performed CPR until the ambulance arrived.
Don Striker, who is the park superintendent, says, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our favorite and most capable park rangers, but we take some small solace in the fact that David passed away while doing what he loved- sharing his love of the outdoors with a group of students. Our entire staff send their sympathy, thoughts and prayers to David's family and friends during this difficult time."
