Marriage equality has been the hot topic all week after President Obama gave same sex couples his support to tie the knot. It was a historical statement that still has people talking.
Some residents tell Eyewitness News same sex marriage is not in God's plan. Other say, they believe it sends the wrong message to children.
Jason Frye and his husband legally married in New York, but live in Charleston.
"We are your friends, family and neighors, your daughters and sons," Frye said. "We deserve the same recognition."
Polls show most people in West Virginia people in West Virginia oppose same sex marriage, but "DOMA" does exist. The definition of marriage act, states that marriage is only between a man and a woman. However the act has never made it out of committee.
West Virginia's house minority leader Tim Armstead said West Virginians should be allowed to vote for a constitutional amendment prohibiting same sex marriage.
"It's important becuase the people of WVa. should have the opportunity to put that in our constitution instead of a court deciding," Armstead said. "It's very clear WVa. doesn't want to change that."
