Pliny , Putnam County , West Virginia

Another driver has been killed on one of the most dangerous roads in the country, Route 35 in Putnam County. The accident Sunday afternoon killed one woman and left another in seriously hurt.

Police say the driver of an SUV drifted left of the center line on the old section of Route 35 near Pliny and hit a woman riding a motorcycle. The motorcycle driver, Pamela Bell of Salem, Virginia, was killed. The SUV driver, 40-year-old Sheila Ray of Winfield, then hit a semi-truck. Ray was seriously hurt and had to be flown to the hospital, she remains in serious but stable condition. Police say they do not believe speed played a factor in yesterday's crash.

The accident only adds to the roads deadly history, but the 14-mile stretch from the Buffalo Bridge to Pt. Pleasant won't be widened anytime soon. The state tried to pass tolls to get the final portion of funding to finish upgrading Route 35 to four lanes, but the toll plan failed. Without tolls the state said there wasn't enough money to finish the final phase of the road project and so far there are no new plans in the works to finish it.

For now, the state is widening the shoulders in certain areas. Putnam County deputies also routinely patrol the road to crack down on drivers who are speeding. They say it is one of their high target areas because people frequently speed and there are a lot of out-of-state drivers, unfamiliar with the road, and a lot of big trucks that travel it.

The Chief Deputy with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says Pamela Bell of Salem, Virginia was the woman killed in a multi-vehicle accident on the old section of Route 35 near the Putnam-Mason County line on Sunday.

Bell was driving a motorcycle when police say an on-coming SUV drifted across the center line and hit Bell. That SUV was then struck by a semi-truck, which forced the SUV into the ditch. The driver of the SUV, Sheila Ray of Winfield, had to be flown to the hospital and we're told she is in serious but stable condition.

The accident happened in the Pliny area, on the stretch of road that has not been upgraded to four lanes.
