The Mayor of Wayne is working double duty, he's also the Police Chief. Mayor Dwayne Stiltner recently became the Chief with Council's approval after weeks of trying to fill the vacant position.
The town lost its only two police officers last month, now the Wayne County Sheriff's Office has deputies filling in to help curb crime.
Even though the Police Chief's role is administrative, some folks have mixed reactions about the Mayor wearing two hats now.
Toots Adkins says, "I just don't think he should the Chief and the Mayor, just be one."
Former Mayor James Ramey III says, "The people of Wayne voted for him to be the Mayor, not the Chief of Police."
Stiltner says, "It's in the by-laws, I can be the Chief as interim until we fill the job."
According to the WV State Ethics Commission, it is legal. Executive Director Theresa Kirk says, "It is appropriate on a temporary basis. The position, salary and hours have to be approved by the town's council."
Stiltner says he does work a lot of hours and being Chief is an administrative position. He says the town is still taking applications with hopes to fill the spot with a qualified person.
