For a production in which not very much happens, plenty has been said about the absurdist play "Waiting for Godot."
Samuel Beckett's career-defining work tells the story of two men who wait in vain for someone named Godot. In his absence they argue, philosophize and contemplate the meanings of life...both large and small.
"Waiting for Godot" has sparked many different interpretations since it premiered in the 1950s. Even though it was voted the most significant English-language play of the 20th century, its critics are many.
"Godot" has been dissected and analyzed countless times over...but its author never gave additional information about his characters...and never identified the mysterious Godot. Beckett left it up to his audience members to reach their own conclusions.
