Two-year-old Graysen Keaton was born with a special condition that affects only one in 10,000 babies. His mom Amanda Keaton tells Eyewitness News, "He has two severe congenital defects. The most severe thing with Graysen is that he doesn't get enough profusion to his lungs. His pulmonary artery did not develop correctly, and that is what causes most of his problems."
Graysen has had three heart surgeries and two strokes, but he's already proved he's a fighter! Now, he has a whole "gang" to back it up. Mom says, "We started 'Graysen's Gang', and with mine and my husband's coworkers and family and friends, last year and this year, we've managed to raise quite a bit of money for the American Heart Association, and just to try to raise the awareness."
"Graysen's Gang" will join hundreds Saturday morning at Ritter Park to help raise money and awareness about hundreds of heart conditions. Congenital heart defects affect one in about every 200 babies. Mom says, "There are other babies out there, and they're not alone."
Research and awareness has saved thousands of lives over the past several decades, and Graysen's mom hopes that success will only continue.
"We can only hope with the research and time that they'll be more improvements and more options for him," she says.
The Huntington Heart Walk is Saturday, April 21st at Ritter Park. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:00 a.m.
