Putting a stop to neighborhood crime, one sign at a time.
The signs speak for themselves. It's all part of a crime watch program initiated by the Nitro Police Department. It's hoped the signs will help deter criminals, knowing the neighbors here are on the lookout.
Police went door to door Wednesday afternoon educating neighbors on how to protect each other and stressed the importance of not confronting a potential criminal themselves, but rather calling authorities when they see something suspicious.
George Keeney says his neighborhood has seen it's fair share of home and car break-ins. But with the help of a sign on his street, and more eyes to help police Keeney hopes to diminish the crime from his backyard.
"If we have 45 to 50 people looking out in their neighborhoods then we can enforce the laws and do better as far as deterring crime," says George Keeney of Nitro.
The crime watch program is in it's beginning stages. But it's being backed by the people who want criminals off their streets for good.
"Any criminal who comes to Nitro will know that not only the police are watching but the community is watching too because we don't want any criminals coming to our city," said Patrolman H.R. Blake of the Nitro Police Department.
The first Crime Watch meeting will be at Nitro City Hall on May 10th.
