With intense competition other states and other countries, landing a multi-million dollar manufacturing plant is no easy feat. The pot was sweetened with tax breaks by the state and the city to lure Gestamp to South Charleston. But the fact that the site has a ready-to-go building covering 30 acres was critically important. In 2007, owner Ray Park asked the state for help in fixing up his facility. Then governor Joe Manchin helped push through a 15-million dollar loan to refurbish and renovate the site. It's been empty for six years...but now...that gamble is paying off. With a promise of at least 400 jobs...and the possibility of as many as 700, Gestamp is the biggest economic announcement in this area in years. Gestamp says it wants to move as quickly as possible and get production up and running by August. The company will soon be accepting applications for the South Charleston plant. However, the details for where you need to go to apply have not been finalized. As soon as we find out we'll let you know. So keep checking here and on our Facebook page. You may be wondering, who or what is Gestamp? It's an international company based in Madrid, Spain, dedicated to design, development and manufacture of metal components and structural systems for the automotive industry. Gestamp has facilities in 22 countries with 95 production centers...13 research and development sites and more than 25-thousand employees. With the inclusion of South Charleston, Gestamp North America now consists of nine manufacturing facilities with six in the U.S. and three in Mexico. The division HQ is in Troy, Michigan. Gestamp's clients include most of the world's automakers, including Volkswagen, Daimler, GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Fiat, Jaguar, Land-Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Saab, Suzuki, Volvo, Hyundai and Toyota.
